Alshon Jeffery Suspended by NFL

According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the Chicago Bears will be without their top offensive player for the next four games. Jeffery has been suspended four games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

“We’re very disappointed,” Bears coach John Fox said. “He’s fairly embarrassed about it. We’ll support him and welcome him back after serving his suspension.”

Jeffery is playing on a $14.6 million franchise tag this season after sides couldn’t come to a long-term agreement this summer. Jeffery was looking to earn top-end wideout money.

Jeffery played for the South Carolina Gamecocks from 2009-2011 under former head coach Steve Spuurier, earning All-American recognition as a sophomore. The 6-foot-3, 218-pound receiver was a second-round draft pick of the Bears in the 2012 NFL Draft.

A Pro Bowler in 2013, Jeffery has racked up 4,358 yards and 25 touchdowns on 292 career receptions.

Jeffery will be eligible to return to the Bears‘ active roster on Monday, Dec. 12 following the team’s Week 14 game against the Detroit Lions.

Monday evening, Jeffery posted to his Twitter account attributing the suspension to a anti-inflammatory drug and issued an apology:

As a professional athlete, I have been careful about what I put in my body. I took a recommended supplement to combat inflammation. Unfortunately this supplement contained an ingredient that was on the NFL’s banned substance list. I take full responsibility and I’m deeply upset with myself for not doing the proper research on this supplement. I want to apologize to my family, the Bears organization, my teammates, and Bears fans. I will work hard to earn back the respect and trust of the Bears nation and look forward to being back on the field.

Jeffery will be a free agent after this season.
